Inspired by moods of science fiction, a striking Lady from a not so distant future, turning her head with a smouldering side-long glance.

Glazes of colour mixed with Linseed Oil follow, and the tonal values are balanced gradually and allowed to dry before the next coating. The translucent applications of colour allow Lead White high tones to reflect light back at the viewer, adding a subtle luminance and reflectivity.

Commissioned by a private collector, Ethel pays homage to the ideal of timeless beauty and the Art Deco style. Firstly a dark acrylic background on the canvas is applied to create a subtle texture that dries rapidly. Then follows an oil paint layer which takes that texture. This technique is in a way similar to the old black and white Grisaille technique. The difference with this style is that I start with a dark tone as opposed to a mid-tone and then using white oil paint, create the forms and contours. The shadows remain in the image from the original underpainting. Finally transparent glazes and subtle colourings in acrylic paint occur over the oil.

The Salute

Based on abstract sculpture “The Salute”, broaches the exciting game of three-dimensional, concave and convex surfaces, irregularly and sharply set against each other, resulting in volume and archaic force, as if generated by carving stone with flints and hand axes from prehistoric times. On the other hand the forms are also reminiscent of Cubist sculptures. The empty, seemingly endless spaces wherein the painted sculpture floats weightlessly, are metaphysical abstractions in the tradition of Giorgio de Chirico. In this image, kept in a cool, gray-blue, despite all the abstraction, anthropomorphic proportions of human figures still echo. There are heads, limbs and bodies in prismatic fragmentation and celebration of the female form.

The BOW

In this oil painting “Abstract Figure, The Bow” the artist represents a sculpture poised in the sparse, surrealist landscape of a tranquil setting, with cubist forms curling into smooth three dimensional surfaces. The metaphysical abstraction remains with the suggestions of woman, that reifies the subject of the celebrated female form in a posture of recognition, reverence and respect.

Painted in pale primary colours, this picture creates a teeming tide pool of psychogenetic memory flashes with its masks, skeletons, animals, architectural fragments and symbols of ancient cults and religions. Prehistoric and eschatological references combine with crystalline structures into a scattered cosmos of fractured uniformity. In addition, the artist also shows the culturalized worlds of classical modernism such as Lyonel Feininger, Hermann Finsterlin or Erich Mendelsohn. The faceted pyramids are reminiscent of H.C. Escher as well as those of ancient Egypt, whilst the birds remind one of Pablo Picasso’s doves. Such cultural, historical associations and references stimulate the imagination of the viewer. AudIENCE AT THE TEMPLE

Drawing • 24cm x 40cm

In this image, an un-earthly assembly. The depiction seems like an apotheosis or an animalistic last judgement. The title “Audience at the Temple” reminds of a divine temple of the Gods. Central ethereal figures in prayer, seem to belong to a different and numinous reality.

The Trojan Horse stThe Trojan Horse stands in a field of archetypal and mythological creatures that seem to belong more to the legends and the demi-mondes of JR Tolkien than to the ancient epic of Homer. The background at the image’s centre is lightened, so that an almost baroque illusionary space arises. Preceding any historically accurate tradition was the narrative, a poetic disclosure of past events, for which Homer is known as the first exponent. The birth of historiography is therefore the narration. Additionally, the Cosmos that the artist has applied to this image resets Homer’s Trojan Horse, to its original context of mythology, exculpated from rational classicism.
